New York City Area Consortium for Earthquake Loss Mitigation (NYCEM)

NYCEM is a group of NYC stakeholders formed to address NYC's seismic vulnerability due to its infrastructure liabilities, large population, and lack of preparedness.

Earthquake Risks and Mitigation in the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut Region presents the results of a thorough risk and loss assessment of potential earthquakes in the NY-NJ-CT region, conducted over a 4 year period.

Earthquake Loss Estimation Studies by the New Jersey Geological Survey. Many Manhattan neighborhoods are more susceptible to earthquake damage due to the lack of foundation bedrock. On Aug 23, 2011, residents in the Upper West Side felt a 5.8 magnitude earthquake that shook the area due to its tall buildings.

Geologic and topographic data were acquired and analyzed for six counties in New Jersey to compile maps of seismic soil classes, liquefaction susceptibility, and landslide susceptibility. This data was entered into a HAZUS model for each census tract in the county. The HAZUS model was run with the upgraded geologic data for earthquake magnitudes of 5, 5.5, 6, 6.5 and 7. The results are contained within each report. The counties are: Bergen, Essex, Middlesex, Morris, Passaic and Union.
